Speaking From the Body: Treating Trauma and Enriching Your Practice Through a Somatic Experiencing®  Perspective

Trauma, whether acute shock trauma, or developmental trauma, is experienced first in the nervous system.  Unresolved trauma can lead to a myriad of symptoms and even character defenses.  Tapping into the patient’s “felt sense” opens new pathways to addressing trauma,  moving clients from “stuck” patterns, and allowing for its resolution.

Somatic Experiencing®, a therapeutic model developed by Peter Levine, PhD., is designed to address the psychobiological consequences that can result from unresolved developmental and shock trauma.  Working in a carefully titrated way with the survival instincts mobilized in the fight/flight/freeze response, SE® allows the body to return to its natural range of resilience.

In this workshop*, Pamela Rosenblum will give a brief overview of the theory and basic concepts of this model.  Through lecture, demonstration and case material, participants will

  • Obtain a new paradigm for thinking about diagnostic categories  informed by an understanding of how trauma is held in the nervous system.
  • Gain a basic understanding of  the ways incorporating mindful body awareness can enhance their effectiveness with clients.
  • Be introduced to the value of working with the Mind/Body.
  • Have a personal experience of tuning into their “felt sense” and nervous system regulation.

Pamela M. Rosenblum, MS, LP, NCPsyA is a faculty member and supervisor at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center.  A licensed Psychoanalyst, she is an Advanced Participant in The Foundation for Human Enrichment Training in Somatic Experiencing, as well as a member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
